HOLIDAY VACATION: We will be closed Dec. 25 and 26, reopening Dec. 27 through New Year's Eve, then closed Jan. 1 to Jan. 7, reopening Jan. 8.

The Flying Pig Bookstore carries more than 40,000 books, cards, and gifts on hand for all ages, with the ability to order quickly from our 2+million-book database.

Great selection and friendly, extremely knowledgeable staff to help with all your book needs (or leave you alone to browse in peace). While we are a full-service general bookstore, we have a strong children's book specialty. Yankee Magazine named us 2013 Best Children's Bookstore in New England!

Happy news! The Wall Street Journal has chosen us as one of seven bookstores around the country that help serve as anchors for their wonderful towns. That story will be out on December 27 in the Off Duty section of the paper. Also, Flying Pig co-owner Elizabeth Bluemle's book, Tap Tap Boom Boom, was chosen for the New York Public Library's 100 Best Children's Books of 2014! There's lots of celebrating going on at the Flying Pig, and WCAX and WPTZ came to capture a little bit of it:

WCAX.COM Local Vermont News, Weather and Sports-

The Flying Pig annual book-review newsletter is here!

Each year, we publish a round-up of our favorite books of the year for all ages. The reviews are weighted toward newer fall releases, but the newsletter is a compendium of fantastic books from all of 2014. Readers will be happy to see a return of the Flying Pig's handy X-Y Guide (If you liked X book, try Y book), as well as a robust section of titles for kids and adults by Vermont authors and artists. Come on in for your copy! As always, newsletter books are 20% off through the holidays.

Snowflake Project -- Thank you all!

Every year, we team up with local agencies serving families to bring new books into the hands of children. This year, we worked with the Shelburne Food Shelf, CLiF, and the Lund Family Center, giving out more than 140 books donated by customers and the store. Many of the books went to an innovative program that enables incarcerated parents to record themselves reading the book to their children, and the children then receive not only the book, but the recording, as well. It's a beautiful way to keep families connected.

The way the Snowflake Project works is this: throughout the store, we hang snowflakes that say "boy" or "girl"and the child's age. Then customers choose as few or as many snowflakes as they wish, purchase the books at 20% off, and we wrap the books for the organizations. We have customers who have participated in this program for more than 15 years! It's one of our favorite events of the year, and we so appreciate all of you for showering deserving families with new books!

A World Full of Color -- We live in a wonderfully diverse world, and yet it can be challenging to find a wide range of books featuring main characters of color where race is not the driving force of the narrative. Elizabeth maintains a database of nearly 1,000 terrific titles for babies to teens:

We also write for Publishers Weekly about children's books and bookselling,  in a blog called Shelftalker. Josie and Elizabeth take turns posting bookselling anecdotes, book reviews, funny stuff, and literary treats of all kinds.
